How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Hard to believe but How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is almost 20 years old and ugh they just don’t make romcoms like this anymore. It may even beat When Harry Met Sally as the greatest romcom of all time. Sometimes movie magic just falls into place with the perfect cast and the perfect script and you can’t get much more perfect or beautiful than Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

Women want to be friends with Kate Hudson

They are the perfect romcom leads as the girls want to be friends with Hudson and the guys want to sleep with her, and the girls want to sleep with McConaughey and the guys want to be his mate. Plus the easy chemistry they have as a pairing is something I don’t think you can compare to any other romcom pairing, you can tell they bounce off each other really well.

The cast aside what makes How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days so special is that the plot itself is slightly different to those of a normal romcom, yes it is boy meets girl, girl and boy get together, boy messes up loses girl, boy apologises and gets the girl back BUT the twist is the girl is trying to lose the boy all along and guy is doing anything he can to keep the girl and the messing up part is both of them. The simple flip on a stereotypical narrative of romantic relationships makes it the perfect back drop for such an original story.

Matthew McConaughey is the perfect leading man

Plot aside the soundtrack of this film is just as big a part of the story as the plot, and it is the only romcom of the era I can think of off the top of my head that doesn’t have that lovely but oh so overused Natalie Cole song.

The soundtrack fits the tone of the film perfectly and it doesn’t rely on the songs that are so overused in romcoms, the 00’s had a big run on romcoms and the soundtracks were always essentially the same, not How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days though, you’ve got to hand it to the production company and director they did a stellar job on this film even the lighting is beautiful!

you can tell these two bounce off each other well

All together, cast, plot and soundtrack you have the perfect recipe for the perfect romcom to make you route for the couple and give your heart a little melt when they finally end up together at the end.

It is the perfect romcom for any film night or those nights when you just want to dig into a pint of Ben and Jerries and fall into the magical movie world of New York City and pretend you’d look half as good as Hudson does in that gold dress.
